HOW TO CREATE ON-TREND SPACE FOR YOUR CHILD IN 2024

THE RISE OF CARAMELISED PEACH

In the upcoming year we will observe a steady shift from popular earthy palettes of light browns and sage greens associated with warm and soothing environments. Calming colour scheme is still a popular choice for many parents however in 2024, woodland inspired theme will be making space for the sunbaked PEACH FUZZ.

Announced as colour of year by Pantone, Peach Fuzz is just like a warm hug, full of sweet shades of melba and nectarine - perfect pairing with greys or with deeper tones of nursery wood. Wonderfully gender-neutral, peach can also be easily accessorised with floral accessories for more feminine feel or paired with block colours such as browns and greens for more masculine look.

WHIMSY & IMAGINATIVE SPIRIT OF CHILDHOOD

A broader movement towards more expressive and bold children’s interiors is also starting to take shape. This applies particularly to playrooms where spaces have to go beyond functionality and also nurture creativity in children. This trend, centred around boundless fun often includes injecting dialled-up vibrant hues or patterns around the room. These can be added as coloured rugs, statement pieces such as sofas, oversized artwork or wall murals.

The key to mastering this trend is getting the balance just right. Backdrops should be predominantly neutral with pops of colour taking up not more than 10% of the room size. Colour combination can be easily perfected by the selecting colours of the same saturation across the board. As a rule of thumb, a horizontal selection of any 5 colours displayed on paint chart will always work together.

TIME FOR PARENT-CENTRIC ERA

As with most trends there will always be an element of polarity where an opposing trend also emerges at the same time. In 2024, decorating trends also embrace the rise of parent-centric design where parents balance their own style whilst catering to the needs of their children. This shift is building momentum as a new wave of sustainable-living is moving towards a considered consumption of goods. Parents love an idea of repurposing existing furniture for another baby or even better, are inclined to opt for decor which can easily work in any other space. For this reason, a rise in “adult-styled” nurseries is observed.

This trend can show up in patterns, light fittings or smaller decor items such as brass finishes, cushions or a collection of vintage art. For a child-friendly finish, a statement mobile (also making a big come back) or a statement changing matt, will pull this look together - perfect for creating a room with personality.

HINTS OF NOSTALGIA

Following lead on “adult-styled”nurseries it’s no surprise that parents also warm up to the idea of connecting their children’s bedrooms to nostalgic characters of their own childhood. This growing trend incorporates use of densely distributed patterns in form of wallpaper, soft furnishing or other decor connecting vintage-vibe with currently popular, dirty neutrals.

Recently released collection of wallpapers by Sanderson hit the market in late 2023 with big BANG featuring favourite characters of every 90’s child. From Mickey Mouse to 101 Dalmatians and Bambi, Sanderson curated and impressive collection of 30 wall coverings and matching fabrics for maximum impact.

Achieving vintage-inspired theme can tricky to master however sticking with a simple rule of mixing vintage patterns with modern furniture will ensure a cohesive and trendy design that’s guaranteed to impress parent and visitors alike.

ELEVATED TAKE ON PANELLING

Country-inspired panelling - this ever so popular trend of half-panelled walls, is slowly being replaced by a number finer looking alternatives. Decorative trims, beaded borders or scalloped picture frames will be taking 2024 by the storm.

Added to dado/ picture rail or incorporated into existing joinery are all examples of introducing child-friendly finish to any blank canvas. Relatively easy to install, trims can be painted in the same colour as wall or for more playful look, a contrasting colour such as yellow or red would work just as well.

For dedicated admirers of this emerging trend, a number of retailers released free-standing furniture with trims and bobbin detail showing the craftsmanship behind every piece. With a substantial selection of available trims, this trend is bound to stay with us for the next couple of years.

STORAGE ON ANOTHER LEVEL

Aside from decorative aspects of children’s interiors, we are seeing more requests for well designed storage which can grow with the child and beyond. A planet conscious mindset is a dominant influence on products and materials with natural materials such as wood or its derivates became synonymous with quality and longevity.

Fitted or bespoke storage can be designed to hold a number of functions, from toy and clothing storage to concealed play benches or media units. Bespoke carpentry is often a pricey solution however if given enough thought, can become the ultimate design piece ticking both, decorative and functional boxes at the same time.
